Editorial Reviews

“Narrator Dion Graham conveys Justyce McAllister’s depth of character and inner conflict…Graham at first registers Justyce’s confusion and shock. With equal believability, Graham depicts Justyce’s anger and trauma at experiencing racism at his mostly white prep school…Graham reflects Justyce’s isolation, suffering, and occasional moments of solace…[and], finally, hope in this powerful journey of self-discovery. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.” AudioFile
“Stone’s novel is a raw, honest, and in-depth look at modern racism in America. She analyzes racism not only through the lens of a young man living it, but also through the lens of the past and Dr. King’s teachings. This multi-layered approach to such a complex and heartbreaking problem goes deeper than ‘racism is bad’ and instead analyzes what forms racism can take and the idea that there’s no such thing as ‘harmless racism’ or ‘funny racism.’ She shows how the events in people’s lives shape their beliefs and prejudices—and sometimes even change them…Compelling.” RT Book Reviews (4 stars)
