Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874 – 1922) was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. “The Voyage of the James Caird” is the story of Shackleton’s 1916 failed attempt at a crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea via the pole. Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) was an Irish polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic in the early twentieth century. He was a junior officer under Robert Falcon Scott during the 1901–1904 expedition to the South Pole. His expedition on the whaler Nimrod in 1907 earned him a knighthood. He detailed his adventures aboard the Endurance during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914–1917 in the memoir South.
